A dining room combined with a kitchen or living room is a rather convenient option if you often spend time with your family at one common table. Ideally, a separate room in the house should be allocated for the dining room, but the reality is that apartments with small kitchens appeared in our country in large numbers back in Soviet times, and only owners of private houses can afford a dining room, and even then not always.

However, if you are firmly convinced that your family needs a place where you can gather and chat during breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and this is definitely not a coffee table in the living room, then you should know how to divide the room into functional areas or equip a full dining room if you live in a cottage.

If your apartment has a small-sized kitchen, then you won’t be able to create a dining room in it even if you want to. But if the area allows, then you can greatly simplify your life and not move with plates, salad bowls, and cutlery throughout the apartment, but cook and eat in the same room.

How to demarcate functional areas:

– If you are not embarrassed by the appearance of the kitchen set, and your relatives or guests are not bothered by the cooking process and the smell of the dishes being prepared, then it is enough to apply visual methods of delimiting the space. Decorate the floor and walls of different areas with contrasting paints or different finishes; mark the dining area with a carpet on the floor, and highlight the kitchen area with a ceramic tile backsplash; use spotlighting for the work area, and the main one for the dining table.
– If you do not want the kitchen set to be conspicuous for the guests and for you the main point is cooking alone, you can divide the zones using furniture, turning the sofa back to the work table, placing a cupboard or rack between the kitchen and the dining room.
– A movable partition is the most acceptable, average solution to the problem.

The only really significant disadvantage of the kitchen-dining room is that it will not be possible to hide from smells either behind the partition or behind the furniture. It’s good if your appetite is stirred up by the aromas of spices, but what about the smell of fish or garlic? Therefore, it is worth thinking a hundred times before stopping your choice on this option.

In most apartments, the largest room is the living room, which is why it is possible to allocate a place for a dining room in it. Moreover, it is here that not just tea drinking is usually held, but solid feasts during the holidays.

How to divide the living and dining areas:

  • It is advisable to choose a place for the recreation area farther from the door, for the dining room – closer to the window, place interior items such as bookshelves and shelves along the walls or in the corner.
  • On a large area, zones can be divided using furniture, partitions, or bright accents, and at the same time try to make sure that there is no empty space in the center of the room.
  • Use different flooring: parquet for the living room, tiles, or laminate for the dining room.
  • If you got a small room, then the dining room can arise only if necessary: use a transforming table and folding stools that will hide in the ottoman.

Otherwise, you can offer the same zoning tips as for the kitchen dining room.

A separate dining room in the house seems to be a luxury today, although even in the 19th century and earlier it was considered a sign of good form: in the Middle Ages, an entire floor was allocated for it.

The design of the dining room in a private house is most often made in a classic style: the walls are painted in the same tone, accents are placed using interior items and decorative items, around or long rectangular table is located in the center, the lighting above it should be soft and slightly muted.

Do not forget about other interior items that were originally intended exclusively for the dining room. For example, it must contain a buffet for storing festive dishes and cutlery. In addition, the chairs standing around the table invariably attract attention: it is good if they are massive, with high backs and soft upholstery.

Finally, if the area of the room allows, you can arrange in the dining room interior items that give it a special flavor – a grand piano, a large grandfather clock with a cuckoo, a special rack in which a collection of wines will be stored.
